The San Joaquin Daylight had been inaugurated in July of 1941. Although it had received some equipment from the Daylight pool, the jump to fully streamlined status would have to wait until the United States' entry into World War II. Wartime regulatory boards were not especially thrilled with luxury passenger service of any stripe, particularly twice-daily service along the same route as then existed on S. P.'s Coast Line. Southern Pacific responded by cancelling the Noon Daylight on the coast run and assigning its equipment to the interior route. The newly streamlined San Joaquin Daylight began operation on January 5, 1942.
