By October of 1964 the Twin Star Rocket had been cut back to a Minneapolis-Fort Worth run; Houston-bound passengers had to transfer to the Burlington's Sam Houston Zephyr for Dallas and points beyond. By July of 1966 the Sam Houston Zephyr was gone. By March of 1967, so was the Twin Star Rocket, although the train numbers were retained under a new name, the Plainsman, on a Minneapolis-Kansas City routing. This service would hang on through June of 1969—but by February of 1970 it too was gone.
