By the end of 1954 Canadian National's passenger equipment modernization program was essentially complete. One result of this effort was a new transcontinental flagship which made its debut alongside the competing Canadian Pacific Canadian on the same inaugural day: April 24, 1955.

The Super Continental suffered from a perception that its route was less scenic than that of the Canadian and that its equipment was inferior (as dome cars could not operate on electrified sections in the Montreal area). The latter situation was somewhat addressed in 1964 when CN purchased the Super Dome cars of the former Olympian Hiawatha from the Milwaukee Road and put them in service between Winnipeg and Vancouver, but little could be done to improve the scenery.
