At some point between August 1968 and March of 1969, the Magnolia Star designation for the coach component of the Panama was quietly dropped.  By 1971, according to this timetable, only a single Chicago-New Orleans sleeper remained in the formerly all-Pullman consist. This is the final timetable before the handover of the once-great train to Amtrak. While Amtrak would initially cancel it in favor of the daytime City of New Orleans, for a few years in the late 1970s the Panama Limited name would return as Amtrak shifted back to an overnight schedule on the Chicago-New Orleans run.
