According to Wikipedia, the first man to propose a rail link between Kansas City and Topolobampo was Albert Kinsey Owen. However, it was Arthur Stilwell, the driving force behind the Kansas City Southern, who succeeded in actually building much of the line. Even so, it took until November 24, 1961 before the Mexican government finally completed the southern portion of the route as the Chihuahua Pacific Railway—better known to those who live along its route as"El Chepe" . Here you see the newly completed railroad's initial passenger service, a twice-weekly overnight run between Ojinaga and Topolobampo.

While the Chihuahua Pacific continues to carry one of the last (and probably most popular) passenger train services in Mexico between Chihuahua and Los Mochis, the U.S. half of Arthur Stilwell's railroad has fallen on hard times. In the early 1990s the Santa Fe Railway sold its former Kansas City, Mexico & Orient trackage and much of it was subsequently abandoned and scrapped.
